Viking has suddenly turned their performances upside down. After a shaky start they have now got 3-1-1 from their last five matches. Their last match against Haugesund (0-2) was clearly a good sign for them. Viking was able to create chances as well as they were able to stop all the efforts from Haugesund. It seems like the team is finally in it as a group and has found the right mixture of offensive individual performances and tight defensive work as a unit. This has been a huge problem for Viking in the recent seasons, but the supporters have also got some belief back in the team now. Midfielder Björn Daniel Sverrisson (0/0) is missing from the squad, while defender Indridi Sigurdsson (5/0) is doubtful.
Start has really been disappointing of late and it reached a whole new level with just a draw against out-of-form Bodo/Glimt (1-1) at home on Wednesday. It was a terrible game again from Start who also lost with huge numbers recently against Molde (4-0) and in the cup against Vindbjart (4-0) who play in 2nd Division. A win against Bodo/Glimt was clearly expected with the season that Bodo has had so far.
Their coach, Mons Ivar Mjelde, told the media after the game that it was a lousy game from them, but stated that they are not better at the moment, and that they therefore had to be “satisfied” with only one point against the rock-bottom team in Tippeligaen. The situation regarding injuries is not any help for them tonight either. Midfielder Espen Borufsen (6/3), defender Jon Hodnemyr (5/0), defender Jesper Mathisen (0/0), midfielder Mathias Rasmussen (0/0), midfielder Gudmundur Kristjansson (6/0) and striker Matthias Vilhjalmsson (7/3) are all missing tonight’s game. Especially Borufsen and Vilhjalmsson are crucial in terms of their offensive potential.
Viking seem to slowly finding some momentum to build on from their recent matches, while Start’s spirit seem to be fading more and more in each game they play. It is the May 16th which is the national day of football in Norway. This is a traditional day with usually a lot of people supporting their teams, in order to get the win before the National Day on May 17th is going to be celebrated. The celebration on May 17th for the home team is a lot easier with a win from tonight’s match. With the two teams’ recent performances and the important injuries, Viking should be able to continue their momentum and cover the handicap as well.
