Viking has not been able to handle the pressure in Tippeligaen once again. After several mid-table seasons, it has started out with six points after 2-0-3 so far this season. After an awful performance against Rosenborg (1-4) at home last weekend, they beat the newcomers Sandefjord (1-2) during the midweek. However, they did not reach their potential in this game either, as a penalty in the 82nd minute gave them the opportunity to take all three points back home.
Sandefjord dominated the possession during the whole match and created enough chances to win the game, but was not experienced enough to manage that. It had not been anything to say if the game had ended in a draw or even a home win, but Viking got three vital points after another horrible start of the season. It has been something nervous about the way Viking play and it has been a problem for some years now. They have not been able to convince their own crowd that they are doing their best either. People in Stavanger are choosing their hockey team Stavanger Oilers instead of supporting their football team Viking. The team chemistry is not optimal and they seem to lean on individual moments instead of setting up each other in good positions in order to create chances. Their coach Kjell Jonevret is clearly a pressured man at the moment, and the timing could not have been any worse when his former team arrives at Viking Stadion tonight. Defender and team captain Indridi Sigurdsson (3/0) is doubtful, while midfielder Björn Daniel Sverrisson (0/0) is out with a long-term injury.
Molde has really been stepping up since their loss against Odd (1-2) during the first game of this season. With 3-1-1 in total there is no doubt that they will be among the title contenders this season also. After a rather mediocre performance away against Haugesund (0-0) last weekend, they made a solid stamp on the game against Stromsgodset (3-1) in their last game.
After conceding an early goal during the first quarter of the game, Molde was very effective and score three goals from three shots on goal. It has to be said that they let Stromsgodset to four big chances to score though, but at the same time they were just able to step up offensively. The total impression was therefore a clear win for Molde as they are able to be a lot more effective than their opponents. They are also able to get a points or even a win on days when it does not look like they are getting anything. That is the main difference between a champion and the rest of the league, as we all know. As for injuries, it is the same situation for Molde; Striker Mushaga Bakenga (0/0), striker Fredrik Gulbrandsen (0/0), defender Magne Simonsen (0/0) and midfidler/ winger Joshua Gatt (0/0) are still missing.
This is a game where the difference of quality and self believe should be separate the two teams from each other. Viking has been a tough opponent for Molde in earlier years, but last year was another story as Molde won both at home (1-0) and away (1-2). Their biggest rivals in the title race Rosenborg won their match deservedly against Odd (1-2) yesterday. That is leaving Molde no other choice but to win this match, as a loss here will make a gap of six points up to Rosenborg. Taking the way that the teams are performing into consideration, Molde should be able to win.
