St Truiden had a very successful previous season as the team won direct promotion to Jupiler league and finished all their competitive duties early, already at the end of April. No doubt that such situation gave more than enough time to club’s management to prepare whole team well, but also to prepare themselves well for the transfer window.
They have signed plenty of new players and actually changed their team a lot, with the biggest signing being goalkeeper Yves de Winter from AZ Alkmaar, central defender Ruben Fernandes from Estoril and offensive players such as Yuji Ono from Standard, but also loaned offensives Yanis Mbombo Lokwa and Jean-Luc Dompe from Standard both and Victorien Angban loaned from Chelsea. Coach Yannick Ferrera remains at the club for one more season, while the team had successful preparations with the most notable matches being 1:0 victory over Charlton and draws against Lokeren and Ujpest – all three games in the latest preparation phase.
Unlike most of other teams in the new season, Club Brugge already had one official game, it was a Super Cup finale against Gent last Thursday which they lost with a narrow 1:0 result. Only goal was scored in 87th minute via Depoitre, while overall impression was that Gent has fully deserved their victory being way more concrete side on the field.
On the other side, it looked like Club Brugge still needs some more time for their players to settle in and start playing like a real team as they really have problems moving the ball in the midfield. They also changed their squad a lot, with the most notable players who left the club being defensive midfielder Francisco Silva who went back to Osasuna, while striker Kehinde Fatai signed for Sparta Prague and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan continuing his career in Valencia. On the other side, they spent six millions euros to bring duo – offensive midfielder Hans Vanaken from Lokeren and striker Abdoulaye Diaby from Lille.
Club Brugge will surely want to make an impact and start attacking from the off after they lost the Super Cup title last week. Game should be as open as possible and even St Truiden will surely have their chances to score, while it won’t be much of a surprise even if we see Club Brugge solely scoring three goals here.
