Schalke didn’t manage to get a victory last weekend against Augsburg away from home, but also didn’t manage to impose their domination during the game, as the teams ended sharing a point in a goalless game, but also sharing overall impressions. Neither of the teams looked very offensive and the final result was completely fair this time.
Both teams had tries to score a goal, but lacked more concrete ones, as most of their tries were long shots and not chances that came after a creative setup. With this draw, Schalke now has three matches in a run without a victory, after previously losing at home against Leverkusen and drawing on the road against Hertha, as the team currently stands fifth. They are now almost without chances to play in Champions League next season, being eight points below fourth placed Leverkusen, but still have to keep Europa League position as Hoffenheim is only three points below them. Roman Neustädter returns from suspension and should start in the midfield, while the hosts also welcome back Julian Draxler and Jefferson Farfan, who are fit again after long-term injuries. They still miss defenders Jan Kirchhoff, Kaan Ayhan and offensive midfielder Chinedu Obasi.
Freiburg, on the other side, took an important 1:0 victory at home against Koln last weekend. It was their second consecutive victory in Bundesliga after defeating Augsburg previously 2:0, as the team climbed up to 14th position, escaping from the relegation zone and being currently three points above the red zone placed sides.
The team also comes from a narrow defeat in German Cup against Wolfsburg, as they looked rather well in the defense and didn’t let the hosts have too many goalscoring chances, but still conceded the only goal from a penalty kick early in the second half without further response later on. With a 2-4-7 record on the road, Freiburg can’t hope for much in this game, but for sure the team will try to do whatever is possible as the team needs every single point. On a positive side, the visiting side has no fresh injury or suspension worries for this game and coach will be able to field up his best starting eleven.
Schalke won’t have an easy job here, but the team should finally respond with much better offensive performance. Freiburg will be battling for the every possible ball on the field, but the hosts have much more quality and should prevail here, easy or hard. In my opinion, they will finally show some of their offensive talent and will get the victory with more than couple of goals scored.
