After four consecutive defeats in previous weeks, Reims surprised everyone with a fully deserved victory last weekend away to Bastia taking the three pointer with a 2:1 result. They completely dominated the field in the first halftime, managing to score both goals, while the players of Bastia simply looked like they even didn’t exist on the field.
In the second part, Corsicans awoke and tried to reduce the score, in the end making it, but for sure the home side didn’t deserve anything more than that. After run of four defeats, Reims has entered the relegation battle as the team now stands only a point above the red zone and needs points in every game they play, so there is no space for generosity today. Coach Olivier Guegan has only three absent players for tonight’s game, as the team misses regular defender Franck Signorino (24/0) who is injured, same as backs Chris Mavinga (9/0) and Anthony Weber (11/0). First one is big blow for the hosts, but every player counts in their limited roster.
Lyon, on the other side, comes from a 2:2 draw at home against St Etienne last weekend. They were the ones who took the lead early, but players of St Etienne reacted well and gained the control over result at the end of the first halftime. The visiting side had been given a penalty kick then, while Lyon stood playing with a man less since the middle of the first halftime.
Despite numerical disadvantage, Lyon was better in the second half, scoring equalizer in the end, while the final result was perfectly fair reflection of what we saw on the field. After yesterday’s victory of PSG, Lyon is now three points behind the league leaders, but with the same number of matches played as the Parisians which makes this game a must win for them. Atmosphere remained good, but tonight’s victory is the only way for the things to improve, or remain at least at the same level. Central defender Milan Bisevac (13/0) is out for few months already, while midfielder Yoann Gourcuff (17/3) also isn’t playing for more than few weeks. Central defender Lindsay Rose (13/0) is suspended after getting that red card last weekend.
Both teams in a must win situation, each for their own reasons. Lyon simply has to win here and has no time to wait or calculate, which should make the game very interesting and open, probably with both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals, at least with bigger chances than the current odds represent.
