With many defensive gaps during the game, Napoli couldn’t do much more in a 4:2 defeat on Wednsday evening away to Empoli. They were three goals down already in the first halftime, scoring two own goals during the match, while the team improved their performance in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to get a point, but only to reduce to final 4:2.
They are now six points away from second placed Lazio and five points away from third placed Roma, as the team seems to be losing away the chance of playing in Champions League next season. On the other hand, they are awaiting Dnipro next Thursday in the first leg of Europa League semifinals clash. The team isn’t having an easy schedule till the end, as they have to play against Lazio and Juventus both, meaning that the home matches remain must win situations for them. Full back Zuniga (7/0), striker Michu (3/0) and midfielder de Guzman (23/3) are both sidelined with injuries, while left back Strinic is probably fit enough to play again.
Milan continued with defeats, coming from a 1:3 loss at home against Genoa last Wednesday evening. Actually, it could be said that their defeat could have been heavier, as the team had miserable first halftime and were lucky not to concede more. Genoa was playing smart and always looked like they know what they want with the ball to their feet.
Even so, the team had a 1:2 result in the middle of the second half, but few minutes later stood playing with a man less, while the guests scored once more in additional time. Even though they came close to Genoa, the team never looked like really threatening to get a point here, once the visitors took the lead. Few scenarios were heard in Milano these days, but it seems that Inzaghi will remain their coach till the end of the season, even though the atmosphere has been ruined with some previous statements. Important striker Menez (33/16) is now suspended, same as back Abate (21/0) and central defender Mexes (17/2). Full back Antonelli (11/1) remains injured, as well as midfielder Muntari (16/2), Essien (13/0) and Montolivo (10/0). Finally, offensive midfielder El Shaarawy (15/1) is also injured. Central defender Alex (17/0) should be back in the team after recovering from injury.
Even though they come from unexpected defeat, I believe Napoli can react here and be much better side than completely out of form Milan with ruined atmosphere inside their locker room. Many absent players in visiting side shouldn’t be a sign for positive performance of theirs and Napoli should take an easy victory here despite playing Europa League game next Thursday.
