Championship action at the Riverside tomorrow in a 12:15 kick off. This is the last fixture of the Championship season. The game will see Middlesbrough host Brighton in a game that has no impact on Brighton’s season at all! The two teams are at the opposite end of the table, Middlesbrough can still get automatic promotion (more than likely won’t as they need to win 19 or 20 – 0 and hope Bournemouth lose their game). But for me Karanka needs to get his team out there and put in a performance. A win will cement 3rd place for Boro and this in theory should see them get the “easiest” opponent in the play-off (I know it never works like this).
Middlesbrough were in a great run of form before they narrowly lost out to a fighting Fulham (4-3). Before this game they had 3 wins in a row (Rotherham, Wolverhampton and Norwich) so no easy games!! Also, Boro have a great record at the Riverside, their last 12 home games have seen Boro win 11 and lose just once! They’ve been solid at home and in the last 12 home games they’ve conceded just 5 goals, scoring 25!! For this reason, Boro have the best defensive record in the Championship! Their top scorer this season has been on loan striker Bamford (19 goals). He has not scored in the last couple of games and the other day he won “Player of the year” for the Championship, I think this will give him a real confidence boost and I’m sure he will look to get on the scoresheet tomorrow against a poor Brighton defence. Team news for Boro is that Fried is out due to suspension, other than that, no major concerns for Karanka.
Brighton on the other hand, have nothing at all to play for, except pride I suppose. Manager Hughton is a decent manager in my opinion and next season I’ve no doubt he will do well, however, they’ve been poor this season, especially in the last month or so! Their form has dropped towards the end of the season and they have won just once in their last 10 games (1-0 vs Blackburn).
Their problem is that they’ve really struggled to get goals, they’ve scored just 44 goals this season, from 45 games, so they don’t even average a goal a game. They head into this game having lost their last 2 games, against relegated Wigan and promoted Watford! The only major concern for Hughton is that Baldock is out. I’ll be backing Middlesbrough – 1 AH @ 2.16 with PinnacleSports. I think this is a great price and should see a return. Best Regards, Shibby.
