TWO exciting matches in the IPL on Sunday. Our man Josh Healey (@joshhealey04) has covered them both for us.
Delhi Daredevils v Rajasthan Royals | Sunday 11:30 | Sky Sports 3
Steve Smith is available to be top Rajasthan batsman at 7/2 with Coral and that’s caught my eye here. Smith helped guide Australia to World Cup glory and he looked to be picking up from where he left off in Rajasthan’s opener, but in the end came unstuck in the 30s.
However, you can’t deny the form this man is in. Smith had a fantastic World Cup and it’s only right that Rajasthan are batting him at number 3.
With no other Rajasthan batsmen showing any clear signs of form, other than Deepak Hooda and James Faulkner who bat lower down, I’m happy to take a punt on Smith.
Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab | Sunday 15:30 | Sky Sports 3
The betting angle on Mumbai-Kings XI for me is boundaries. I like both the 6s and 4s markets, but I’ll opt for the total match boundaries market as it means you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket. William Hill are offering odds of 5/6 for Over 40.5 boundaries to be hit in this encounter, and I’m happy to snap that up.
Over the last three IPL’s the average boundaries hit per game at the Wankhede is 39 (22 games). Last season in particular there was an abundance of boundaries, an average of 48 per game to be exact. This bet would’ve landed in five out of six games at the Wankhede last season and in five from eight in 2013.
The average 1st innings score at the Wankhede last year was 183, whilst in 2013 it was slightly lower at 177. From that we can gather the par score is around 180, and we have two powerful batting line-ups here, alongside some bowlers who are prone to conceding runs. The boundaries are small, the pitch should be a belter and the outfield will be rapid. Hopefully this match follows the script and provides us with a run/boundary-fest.
Rohit Sharma is in good form at the moment and I really like the 3/1 with Betfred on him top scoring with the bat here for Mumbai. Sharma looked in sublime form at Eden Gardens, where he hit a highly impressive 98* and was unfortunate not to reach a century. It’s worth noting that he top scored in two out of five Mumbai games at the Wankhede last season, including when they hosted Kings XI.
I’ll also place a sixes double on Sunday’s matches. Both the Feroz Shah Kotla (Delhi) and the Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai) have small boundaries and often favour the big-hitting batsmen.
With Ladbrokes you can get odds of 10/11 on there being Over 10.5 sixes in the Delhi-Rajasthan game as well as 10/11 on Over 13.5 sixes in the Mumbai-Kings XI game. I’ll back the double, it returns just over 5/2.
Delhi saw over 10.5 sixes in seven of their 13 full games last season, including three from four at Kotla. Meanwhile the same bet would’ve landed in nine out of 14 Royals games last season, including all five away games. Both head-to-head encounters last season would’ve seen this bet land, with 11 (at Kotla) and 15 sixes being scored in those matches.
Delhi let us down with the sixes bet last time but I think they can put up a better showing on home soil. Meanwhile Rajasthan’s first game had 10 sixes, with the Royals hitting seven of those.
Mumbai may have only seen Over 13.5 sixes in six of their 15 games last season but it landed in five out of six games at the Wankhede. As illustrated above, it is a ground renowned for big runs.
Meanwhile Over 13.5 sixes would’ve been a winner in 11 out of 17 KXIP matches including three out of four away games. In the two head-to-head match ups last season this bet would’ve won once, with 15 (at Wankhede) and 10 sixes being scored in those games.
Mumbai’s first game saw 18 sixes smashed, with themselves hitting seven of those. Meanwhile Kings XI only managed three sixes against Rajasthan but I expect their fearless batting line-up to bounce back after a poor display last time out.
Delhi Daredevils v Rajasthan Royals – Steve Smith Top Rajasthan Batsman (7/2 Coral)
Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab – Rohit Sharma Top Mumbai Batsman (3/1 Betfred)
Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab – Over 40.5 Boundaries (5/6 William Hill)
Delhi Daredevils v Rajasthan Royals Over 10.5 Sixes & Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab Over 13.5 Sixes Double (5/2* Ladbrokes)
