Heerenveen ended regular part of the season at seventh position, having nine points less than fourth placed Feyenoord and four matches with no victory in a row. However, they improved when it was needed the most, as Heerenveen progressed over Feyenoord few days ago in the semi-final round up clash for Europa League.
They have won the first leg with a 1:0 at home, but had to play overtime in the second leg, losing it also with a narrow 1:0 result away from home on Sunday evening. Feyenoord was a bit better in that match, but Uth scored two quick goals in the overtime, in 100th and 105th minute, leaving their hosts without proper respond further on. They have defeated the biggest favorite in play-off session and have generally not much to lose in the finals against Vitesse. Coach Dwight Lodeweges won’t be able to count at already long term injured central defender Jordy Buijs (12/0) and other defensive all rounder Doke Schmidt (22/0) who mostly anyway played as a substitute player.
Vitesse, on the other side, comes from a 1:1 draw at home against Zwolle, in quite balanced game where the hosts took the lead in 18th minute via Traore, while the visiting side replied via Necid in 56th minute, but also stood with a man less since 80th minute when central defender van der Werff got second yellow card.
They won the first leg away to Zwolle 2:1 prior to this game and took earned progress here in a completely deserved way, without getting too much in the trouble in last minutes of the second game. Vitesse seems to be in a great form at the moment, as the side has only one defeat in last seventeen matches. Denys Oliynyk is available again for Vitesse, but coach Peter Bosz will probably field up the same squad as he did against Zwolle. Marko Vejinovic is hoping to get some playing time in the midfield, while the visitors have no injury or suspension worry, except already long term absentee right full back/midfielder Kelvin Leerdam (20/2) who is injured.
Vitesse seems to be having more chances of securing the European spot in this clash, however Heerenveen has already progressed over much more favorited Feyenoord. They will surely be now trying to be as offensive as possible in the first leg, while players of Vitesse surely have quality upfront in order to respond properly.
