While Superettan is underway, there are certain teams who still seem to be sleeping early on the season, and one of them is Angelholm. Without throwing too much garbage on one side, the opening has been a disaster for the southern team, with zero goals scored and five conceded. It is easy to stop and stare blindly on the numbers but what is more worrying is that the performances lack intensity and power going forward. Perhaps can a new home game bring the hosts alive again?
The visitors for the day, Varberg is an average team belonging to the upper half but have sharpened the squad a bit which makes them look more interesting this time around. They opened with a 0-1 victory versus GAIS on the road – a very good result considering the tough road game. They followed up with a narrow loss versus Mjallby who are strong at home and also one of the main candidates for promotion. Also, the performances in the Swedish cup looked promising versus Allsvenskan teams like Orebro (3-3) and only lost with one goal difference against Gefle. Looking at only Superettan, two goals forward and two goals conceded shows that the defense is solid but there is a bit more to wish on the offense – however, against Angelholm they should have a decent chance to work with the offensive parts a bit more than in the previous game. Varberg usually opt for a 4-3-3 formation which means an offensive focus and the Nigerian striker Nsima Peter has a key role in the attacking line. The substitution bench is very deep with Thomas Boakye who came from Ostersund, but he is very injury prone. David Johannesson arrived from top team Ljunskile and can also solidify the quality even more. The start of the season has been acceptable and the mood among players and staff has been playful, focused and confident judging by the practices before this road trip. There is more to wish from on the attack, and this should be a good moment for them to use their creative side more than against any other team this far. The visitors have a complete squad without injuries or health issues and will most likely field the same team as in the previous match.
The misery continues for Angelholm who have now gone five matches in a row without scoring a goal. This does not mean it will stay like that forever, but surely a factor to keep in mind. The 3-0 loss versus exceptional Ostersund was not a surprise but the need of points is starting to become an issue. The squad lack depth and overall quality to compete. The formation is too defensive which leads to low positions when they get to possess the ball and find it difficult to generate offense on a lonely striker. Winger Vlado Zlojutro is the only potential creative mind who can actually threaten a bit if he finds a good position for it, but one man can not make the team. Sooner or later, this team will explode in terms of a good performance, but as long as the confidence keeps getting set backs and the losses continues to pile up, it is not going to be any better. The hosts have a healthy squad to their disposal. Though it is difficult to predict the starting players since the Angelholm coach tends to experiement with his team when things do not work out.
What looks one sided on the paper in favor of Varberg is not always that easy on the pitch. Angelholm might have appeared passive and awful so far but a home game might be what they need to be able to dare going forward more. I expect this to be closer than expected but still favor the visitors with a narrow victory, as their morale is higher at the moment and actually have performed promising versus upper teams. Varberg is the more ambitious side and will feel disappointed with only a point here, while Angelholm would take it positively. Still, without being greedy there are enough reasons to take the Varberg draw no bet option in my opinion to an acceptable price.
