Deportivo La Coruna comes from really disappointing performance couple of days ago, as the team suffered 4:0 defeat against Elche away from home. Their game play was completely ruined already after twenty minutes when the hosts had double lead thanks to goals from Jonathas in sixth and Lomban from penalty kick in already mentioned twentieth minute.
Pasalic and Rodrigues completely knocked them out in the second halftime, as the players of Deportivo looked rather unimpressive with the ball to their feet and didn’t look that threatening despite some efforts in offense. Anyhow, the team now stands again in the relegation zone, being first to safe position with the distance of two points. Their situation puts them into the must win situation, even though they are welcoming a bit more reputable Villarreal. Most of the points the team has harvested in front of own fans, and it’s one of the factors they are relying on. Polish defensive midfielder Cezary Wilk (11/0) remains to be the only absentee for the hosts, who should field up a team in a 4-4-2 formation this time with Toche and Riera.
Villarreal, on the other side, is in even deeper crisis, however with a difference that the team has played much better in the first part of the season and therefore has no worries now. On contrary, despite the fact that they didn’t win a single game in last ten matches in all competitions, they are still in contention to get the Europa League ticket.
Most recently, they suffered a narrow 0:1 loss to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening at home, without being much threatening, but in equally poor display in comparison to their opponents. However guests were those who responded better near the end of the game taking all three points thanks to goal from Torres in 74th minute. Most worrying factor is that the team has scored only one goal in last seven matches in Primera, but their downtrend in form can be explained by huge injury list. Most recently, goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo (34/0) suffered ligament damage and won’t perform anymore this season. Injured are also defender Denis Cheryshev (no performance yet), midfielder Bruno (27/3), left back Adrian Martin (7/0), central defender Mateo Musacchio (19/3) and offensive forward Giovani dos Santos (24/1). Couple of players such as Joel Campbell, Luciano Vietto and Ikechukwu Uche are doubtful.
Even though they are in a poor form, Villarreal is still six points above seventh placed Malaga and still can afford to drop points. Deportivo on the other side is in a must win situation and can’t wish for much better opponent when playing in front of own crowd this time. In my eyes, hosts are closer to get the victory, but even if they don’t, they surely shouldn’t lose against completely out of form Villarreal.
